Skin Conditions & Diseases

Clinical experts have identified more than 3,000 types of skin disorders that can cause symptoms ranging from burning and itching to severe emotional and social distress to physical disfigurement. Some skin disorders are quite rare, such as cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, others (like psoriasis) are quite common, and still others (like sunburn) are virtually universal.

The severity of a disease can range from mild and relatively benign to chronic and life-changing. Not surprisingly, given their broad nature and high prevalence, skin disorders affect people of all ages.

The CSPA is committed to providing Canadian skin patients with the latest treatment information and options for the most common skin conditions and diseases. We are constantly adding more information and more sections. Choose from the links at left to learn more.

Skin Basics

The skin is the largest organ of the body. It is a complicated arrangement of tissue and fat. You will find general information about the skin by clicking the links to the left, which are provided to introduce you to the skin's function, what is considered normal skin, and strategies for keeping your skin healthy. Everybody will have problems with their skin at some time or another; therefore, it's important to learn how to identify a problem and know when to consult your doctor. Early treatment very often means a better prognosis and faster recovery. Read the section entitled Identifying Skin Problems to guide you through this process.
