How Geography Plays a Role

The closer to the Equator you live, the stronger the sunlight is and the longer it shines each day at dangerous levels. Going south for a vacation, therefore, places you at particular risk for sun damage and accelerated skin ageing. Conscientious use of a long-lasting sun blocker and wearing appropriate protective clothing is also important.

Although the blazing sunlight hours are shorter in Canada, the thinning of the ozone layer creates special problems for us, putting us at greater risk of UV radiation. The farther north you go, the risk of UV radiation becomes especially acute now that climactic changes are reducing cloud and snow cover. Again, appropriate use of clothing and sun blockers are the best policy. Ancestry and skin-type also play a role in skin ageing. Although no ethnic group is risk-free, those with fair or white skins are at greater risk.
