Efficacy of Algae Formulations on People with Psoriasis

Study Description:
The clinical research team headed by Dr. Peter Jones at Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals University of Manitoba is conducting research to highlight the potential benefits of algae products on the severity of skin lesions, plasma lipids, inflammatory markers and oxidative stress, in individuals with clinically diagnosed psoriasis. Natural ingredients from wild micro-algae found in the pristine coastal water on the West Coast of Canada are being evaluated in this study. These ingredients provide a variety of interesting nutrients that are thought to be beneficial to human health, but have yet to be systematically tested for their anti-psoriasis properties. It has, however, shown beneficial effects in animals. Furthermore, algae products contain anti-oxidants which may potentially target the inflammatory condition of those with psoriasis. Existing evidence from pre-clinical and clinical data, and the use of algae in the diet of many cultures, has demonstrated the safety profiles of human consumption of algae. The study will consist of 3 phases of 29 days each during which volunteers will consume a fixed composition precisely controlled weight-maintaining diet. At the end of each phase, a washout period of 4 weeks will be followed during which people will consume their habitual diets. The 3 phases of treatments will include: - Study diets supplemented with smoothie type beverage containing placebo - Study diets supplemented with smoothie type beverage containing Unique Marine Algae Concentrate (UMAC), which provides 90mg/d of algal extract. - Study diets supplemented with smoothie type beverage containing golden brown algae, which provides 90mg/d of algal extract. Subjects will receive all 3 treatments, however, it will be unknown the order they will be given in what phase. We are looking for non-smoking men and women, aged 18-60 years, not taking medication to lower the blood lipids, diagnosed with stable psoriasis, who are willing to participate in this clinical trial. During this study, participants will be provided with the natural extracts into a smoothie and the three daily meals. In addition, all volunteers will be compensated monetarily for their participation.
